Thinking about refinishing yourself? We strongly suggest you don't. Bathtub refinishing or reglazing is not a do-it-yourself project: It involves the use of strong chemicals and materials that are beyond the skill and ability for most homeowners and untrained users. DIY kits are limited in their strength, durability and the way they are applied.
Thorough preparation of the surface is critical to a beautiful and lasting finished product. The surface needs to be prepared so the topcoat will adhere permanently. Finally the topcoat is applied with a professional spray gun. The skill of our craftsmen mean the resulting finish will be durable, lasting and free of drips or streaks.
Choosing a refinisher is difficult. Make a poor choice and you could be in for trouble. We actually see a fair amount of newly refinished tubs with streaks or where the topcoat is peeling. The problems usually stem from improper surface preparation and low quality materials. Here are some things to look for in a refinisher.
I've used Don to refinish two bathtubs to date: The first had been painted by a previous owner of my house and the paint was peeling off in large sections. The second had a deep rust ring around the drain and needed some extra attention where the tub meets the wall. Both projects were completed quickly and affordably, and are now good as new!

I need a subcontractor for an apartment renovation where the old steel tub looked aweful. By happenstance, I saw the Tub Wizard van in a nearby neighborhood and decided to give him a call. He was very accommodating and managed to fit me in a cancelation slot with only a week to wait. His communication was prompt and to the point and showed up on time. His work was very thorough and he spent almost 6hrs completing the job (that's not a complaint, you really get your money's worth). When he was finished the tub looked new at a fraction of the price it would have been for me to replace it. Highly

I live 32 miles from this guy's business and he told me he is not willing to travel that far. Unless you live in the immediate vicinity of Mount Lebanon, I would try someone else. I've never had anybody turn down my money over 30 miles.
I can't speak to his tub refinishing skills but I can tell you that if he's unwilling to drive 30 miles that's usually indicative of consistent rigidity throughout a business transaction.

We had Don refinish our tub and tile because it would have been over 4000 to replace everything. When he was done, he also cleaned everything up and left our floor clean. That NEVER happens with our kids, let alone contractors that are fixing up our house. We were only without our bathroom for one day. We will highly recommend Don if you want a quality tub refinishing job at a great price.
