To promote the interest of all persons in preserving life, limb and property from loss due to flue fires, other solid fuel related fires, and other hazards associated with residential heating. To provide and promote a standard of excellence by which all Oregon Chimney Sweeps and its membership sweeps may be judged.
To establish and maintain a liaison with the State Fire Marshal's office and with the State Building Code Inspector's Office. A Chimney Sweep attired in black clothes and top hat may bring to mind the happy-go-lucky Mary Poppins characters. He is much more than that. He is a civic-minded small businessman.
His main concerns are Fire Safety and Energy Conservation within his community. When a Chimney Sweep cleans a chimney, he uses brushes to remove all the build-up of soot and creosote from the flue system. These deposits of soot and creosote are responsible for chimney fire damage that totaled an estimated $4.7 million in Oregon during 1986.

The O.C.S.A. credential was established in 1983 to provide homeowners a means to measure a chimney sweep's technical expertise. In addition to passing a rigorous examination, each person wishing to hold a O.C.S.A. certification must also agree to abide by a stringent Code of Ethics. We feel this is critical to protecting homeowners from potential scams.
When you become a certified sweep you will be more effective in your profession to educate your customers and keep homes safe!. When I was a very young chimney sweep, my father brought me to the Oregon Chimney Sweep Association to learn more about the technology of fireplace chimneys. He gave me the OCSA study guide.
OCSA is the only Pacific Northwest recognized trade association for chimney professionals. We strongly recommend that people take a few steps when considering which chimney sweep will perform an annual inspection or related service on their chimney or vent. Because proper care and attention to service can help protect people from unnecessary fires and carbon monoxide poisonings, it is important to choose the professional wisely.
Your chimney-and the flue that lines it-adds architectural interest to your home, but its' real function is to carry dangerous flue gases from your fireplace, wood stove or furnace safely out of your home. A chimney helps your household air stay breathable. Chimney fires can burn explosively - noisy and dramatic enough to be detected by neighbors or people passing by.
