While there are many subspecies of Ipe wood the best subspecies grow naturally, primarily in Northern Brazil. Ipe is the benchmark material for all exterior hardwoods.
Garapa is a high-density hardwood species native to Brazil. Garapa is among one of the most popular species of Brazilian wood. Garapa is sometimes known as "Brazilian Ash" or a "Brazilian Hardwood". I purchased 1x4 Mataverde ipe decking from General Woodcraft about 14 years ago. Our contractor face screwed our deck and it remains as sturdy and beautiful as the day it was installed - no splintering, insects, warping etc. We live in an area with wood boring bees and dealt with them for years. Well, not with this material. Not one bee hole. We especially love that we never have to apply sealer or stain. We choose that look as we live near the salt water and prefer the natural patina gray weathered look. It is beautiful.

I bought Mataverde Ipe decking over a year ago for several outdoor projects in my garden and backyard. The wood looks as beautiful as ever (with no help from me). The beauty of ipe is that it is tough as nails and maintenance free. That is why I will be buying Mataverde Ipe decking when I build my deck next year. The sales people here were very helpful and the wood was delivered right on time by professionals.
