While he was growing up in Philadelphia, Pa, Tom Doty, the founder of Swept Away was always looking for adventure. His thirst for adventure by the way of travel and new experiences got him enrolled into the navy when he was quite young. During one of his navy adventures on an aircraft carrier, Tom threw something into the incinerator that blew up and damaged the brick liner.
The news reached the captain soon enough and prompted him to tell Tom, "You broke it, you fix it". This proved to be a turning point in Tom's life as he learned to lay brick, thereby beginning his new career. After his stint in the navy, Tom lived in California when he came across a job opening that required someone with the experience of laying brick.
Tom was signed up for the job as he was the most knowledgeable of the 50 people who had applied. It was here that Tom learned the most about building and repairing chimneys. The chimney hadn't been used in almost 30 years, so I was anxious on a number of levels, but the folks at Swept Away were just wonderful. Knowledgeable, friendly, and most of all so professional. After contacting a number of companies to try having our dryer vent cleaned in our 3 story townhome, I found Swept Away. Upon arrival, just through discussion they had an idea of what the issue could be and found it to be correct - the roofers that recently replaced the roof covered the vent cap with a screen causing about a 1/2" layer of lent to become trapped and blocking air flow from the exhaust vent. Not only did they clear the vent, but they also provided a copy of the building codes which outlines that the vent can not be screened. We will be using them in the future for normal maintenance
