Since the 1960's our family has worked in the brick and stone foundation restoration business on the North Shore in Olde Salem Village to fine estates in Newton and Wellseley area of Massachusetts. Having learned European lime masonry in Ireland and England our Grandfather quickly gained success in Massachusetts repairing and restoring foundations.
Foundations built in Massachusetts in the 1600's, 1700's, 1800's and early 1900's were all constructed with lime based mortars. We have been repairing and restoring lime stone foundations for decades. Our current third generation family owner a master stone and brick mason grew up in the 1970's white washing basements and repairing brick and stone foundations.

Services
Thompson Crowley Masonry for decades worked in the stone masonry business constructing walls and steps all through out Massachusetts. We have built hundreds of steps and restored countless foundations. As the years passed we have focused more and more on stone foundation restoration and masonry repairs.
Brick steps often need repairs due to harsh winters and high foot traffic. Ice melt will weaken mortar and allow water to penetrate bricks stones causing cracks, deterioration of mortar and loose stones. Damaged steps can easily be repaired by grinding, chemical wash to remove salts, repointing failed mortar and setting loose stones and bricks.
The use of lime in building and as a binding material holding together stones and brick originates in our near past. Heated lime rock that was slaked with water gave early users of lime a paste for building that was superior to clay for building. The art of using lime as a plaster dates back to early civilizations.
Do you work with lime based foundations? Yes we use period correct masonry cements with restorations. Lime foundation restoration and fortified cements with polymers. We offer lime European whitewashing, sealants or structural skins. How do fix failing stone foundations? If the stones are loose we reset them by carefully removing the stones and failing mortar.
To restore a historic stone foundation in New England one must first be familiar with Colonial architecture and period correct building materials. Thompson Crowley Masonry repaired our stone foundation in one week for better price than all competitive bids. They were able to rebuild brick work and fix stone foundation walls that other companies shied away from. They also completely repaired all old mortar and waterproofed foundation. They were also far more experienced and knowledgeable of Massachusetts stone masonry and foundations than anyone else.
