I was looking for a masonry/concrete contractor who could expand my concrete front porch and build a pergola that would fit appropriately with my 1920s house in Mission Hills. It's critical to get the subtleties and texture of the concrete right, so that it doesn't clash and make my house look like a track home.
I found Michael Smyth through yelp, by searching locally (he's in university heights/north park). He doesn't have much of an online presence, which seems to be common amongst the historic restoration contractors I've worked with. It made him seem more legit. I'm so glad I found Michael Smyth masonry!
He was extremely knowledgeable and offered many great design ideas that I had not considered. The price was right and he got the job done quickly, in less than 2 weeks. He was a pleasure to work with, and is a clear communicator. All of the details we discussed were executed properly. He takes great pride in his work and does everything right, so that it will last many decades.

Can't say enough about Michael. We had terrible old brickwork but needed to keep the original brick to maintain historical designation of our older home. He repointed the mortar and kept all the old bricks. He does honest, hard work with high standards. He maintained good communication and a clean work area. It's hard to find guys like him these days.

I found this place on yelp. My husband and I are putting together a budget for a potential remodel. I explained the situation of what we needed, (demo immediately, design later) and Mike replied back, very straight forward and informed me of what I needed to know. If we move forward w the reno I will definitely be calling him in.

Micheal is a true craftsman's with old world skill and talent. We contracted Micheal to repair our fieldstone porch from 1921. The porch column lacked support which started to crumble and fail.
Micheal demoed the column, added a footing, support and recreated the original column. We can't saw enough about the final product, Micheal and his skills.
We would recommend to anyone!

I had the good fortune of contacting Michael Smyth after seeing the positive reviews on Yelp. We were trying to replace a 1950's brick planter on the front of our house with something out of real stone to create a 1920's cottage look. Michael new exactly what to suggest. He is well tenured craftsman who's work is as much an art as it is an occupation. The finished product was awesome.
He kept in touch with regards to the schedule, his prices were fair and he kept the job short and clean.
It was a real pleasure working with Mike and I would absolutely recommend him.

We found a referral to Mike on Next Door and hired him to re-tile our Craftsman fireplace, rebuild the firebox, install a liner and tuck point the chimney. He was AWESOME. The work was absolutely fantastic and he was super communicative about when he would be working and what he was doing at each stage of work. We can hardly believe how good it looks now. Like others on here, I highly recommend him!

I highly recommend Michael Smyth for any concrete / masonry / hardscaping needs.
We engaged Michael for a project at our Mission Hills home to replace a portion of a sidewalk and patio that had been damaged by roots. From design to demo to completion, Michael was pleasant, dependable, hardworking and took great pride in his work. He managed to match the existing style so well that it's difficult to tell what area was replaced.
His pricing was competitive with others we interviewed and he certainly seemed to offer the best combination of quality and value. We'll definitely use him
