Derek Thomas from Thomas Landscapes did an excellent job with my yard. The crew was professional, on time, and qualified. Derek designed an urban garden oasis in my Capitol Hill house with exceptional masonry, especially the custom-designed flagstone patio steps. They worked in the February cold weather without any hassle or delays. Overall excellent results. Derek handled my project with professionalism from design to implementation, on time and within budget. I highly recommend Thomas Landscapes.

Seeing the design and maintenance Thomas landscapes performs on my neighbor's yard convinced me to get in touch with an estimate for our space. Derek was very responsive at first and we set up a day to meet. Emails to confirm the time and date went unanswered and, not surprisingly there was no meeting.
This might be a glitch, but it's a lousy first impression.

I had called them last spring (2019) to give me a price for maintaining my lawn prior to my deployment. They came over to my property, looked at my yard and said they would get back to me on a price and contract for maintaining my lawn. They never got back to me so I had called them numerous times to follow up. All my calls were ignored. Furthermore I can never reach a person when I call the number. It was good that I found another company to take care of my lawn while I was out of the country on military deployment.

I have been a customer for over 10 years and I have never been more impressed with a company. Recently I have been able to inquire about other resources and Derek is always helpful and is willing to spend time and explain with detailed information. Thomas's landscape should be a 5 star company and no less. I highly recommend as my yard has been transformed and now working to create an outdoor oasis as well for social distancing gatherings.

Horrific business communication, tardiness, unreliability, and overall unprofessional behavior. Simple questions regarding project completion will be responded to with harsh, emotional messages. The fact that the owner was more than 30 minutes late for our first consultation without a call, text or email until I repeated tried to get in touch to see if we were still meeting, should have been the first warning sign. Late to the majority of appointments following without notice. They will not proactively update you on the project unless you ask. And ask. And ask. Get everything in writing (or just

Cons: management and the business side of this company are bad. The first review of Thomas Landscapes should have been a warning sign. Promises of calls will go unmet. Polite follow-up emails will be met with hostility. Sub-contractors will not articulate the scope of work. Good receipts and invoices are not automatic. And dealing with management leaves you wishing you picked a different company.

Derek and his crew are always doing amazing jobs. I could say that I'm a busy person and I like to see the front of my house in a good shape but I don't have time to cut the grass and stuff. So I get in contact with them and they go to my house weekly and take care of my whole grass and plants . They are a really nice crew.

So I'm sure the quality of landscaping and knowledge of flora is top-notch.
But The billing is so sloppy that I cannot recommend unless you are happy to pay random bills that appear, just knowing that you have a nice garden. If you demand that bills tightly correspond to events in your yard, go elsewhere. My experience was a copy of the other reviewer's, Alycin's, experience.
Bills coming six months late claiming work was done that I was pretty sure not done, but how to be 100% sure they didn't put down a little mulch six months ago.

Derek and his crew have done great work for me on a few occasions-- installation of a patio and also some planting/landscaping. They have always been super friendly and efficient, and they have really reasonable prices. They are a DC LOCAL business also, and they clearly want to make this a better place to live.

I highly recommend staying away from Derek at Thomas Landscapes. As President of my small condominium association, I invited Derek over to provide an estimate on landscaping and leaf removal services. When Derek came over, I asked him to provide me a written, itemized cost estimate so that our condo association could decide what services were vital and which were not. As a new condo association, we did not have much money in reserves yet. Derek did not provide me with an itemized cost estimate and I had to continually go back to him and request additional information, which he did not provide
