The simple answer is NO, it is very dangerous to do so when the spring will not hold the weight of the door, allowing for certain mishaps to happen. We purchased a home with garage door opener issues. Kevin at AZ Garage Pros initial service call was to set up two replacement remotes and adjust a malfunctioning door. He was very helpful from the initial phone contact and throughout the service call. Knows his stuff. Unfortunately, he had to return when both remotes stopped working. It seems there is a lock button--a first on any opener in past experience--on the inside unit that is very easy to hit by accident. He reset and reprogrammed both remotes. Highly recommend Keven and AZ. He's the rare service industry person who knows the meaning of

Excellent experience with this business as they were very responsive and accommodating with scheduling around my work schedule.
They were able to come out the same day of the call and quickly diagnosed and fixed our broke garage.
