Merkle was founded in 1971 by F.P. (Pete) Merkle as Merkle and Associates. It was first located in Palatine, Illinois. In 1978, after 7 years in Palatine, the company operation was moved to Galena. From 1978 to 2013, the company occupied the same office on Perry Street, gradually increasing its space.

The Modu-Lok System utilizes pre-fired refractory which has a longer installed life and higher resistance to corrosion than plastic or castable systems. Modu-Lok has been widely used in: forge, pelletizing, and reheat furnaces, as roofs, walls, curtains, and bullnoses. Merkle International's independence from refractory manufacturers allows for flexibility in the selection of refractory quality that will fit your process and budget.
