Merritt Arch's roots began in 1975 when James R. Merritt FAIA established his first independent architectural practice. Merritt has been a principal of many firms since this time, collaborating with others with common interests for varying periods of time. He did this by forming Merritt Arch PLLC, which, for the last seven years, has established itself as a leading architectural firm in Tacoma and throughout the Northwest.
As Architects we choose a wider definition of Architecture that includes the design of the total built environment, from the macro level of how a building integrates with its surrounding man-made or natural landscape to the micro level of architectural or construction details. Merritt Arch's focus is the design and construction observation of building projects.
Merritt Arch's passion and expertise is in historic preservation, however our Project Experience includes a blend of Public and Private ventures, spanning from Mixed Use and Transit projects to Community and Convention Centers to Parks and Recreation Facilities. Our public projects usually begin in the Master Plan phase and then proceed with design, upon the project being funded.
