I love the smell of fresh-cut lumber; I always have. It signifies that something exciting is happening - someone's dream of a new home, or a renovation or addition to an existing home, is becoming a reality. The process of birthing a new home can be exhilarating, but at times it can be daunting as well.
Analyzing goals, inspirations, budget, site, microclimate, plus other constraints and opportunities together to define your project. Exploring and refining all the architectural elements that will shape the design: spatial relationships, proportions, materials, structure, systems, and more. Turning concept into detailed buildable instructions.
A sampling of built projects and architectural designs in progress - highlighting residential and mixed-use commercial; new construction, additions, and renovations. A dilapidated flop house on a prominent corner in this historic district is given new life as retail space. A modernist makeover transforms this vanilla developer facade and bathes the interiors in abundant daylight.
Passive solar requires sufficient access to sunlight in winter coupled with effective overhangs in summer. To ensure this in my designs, I create animated 3D sun studies like this one, which draw upon actual sun position data for our latitude, for any given date and time throughout the year. Typically I will look at winter solstice, summer solstice, and the equinox, from sunrise to sunset.
