Born in Rover, Tennessee, military and marriage took Roy to other parts of the country. While living in Detroit in 1948, he started learning the trade of heating and air conditioning working as an apprentice. He eventually moved his family back to Memphis where he became the lead technician at Bell & Hardin A/C Company.
Roy eventually partnered with Bob Cochran opening C & L Heating and Air Conditioning Company. The company thrived as many homeowners were first introduced to central air conditioning. Desiring to have his own company, Roy and Bob (Cochran) sold C & L. In 1974, Roy started Lee's Air Conditioning Company, which eventually became Lemmon Heating & Air Conditioning Company.
Roy spent his lifetime giving his customers excellent service and building his company by treating his customers as he himself would want to be treated-with honesty and respect. Roy's greatest joy was his family. He and his wife had five children. Roy lived to see 14 grandchildren, 27 great-great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.
