The term Passive House refers to a rigorous, voluntary standard for healthy, comfortable and energy efficient buildings with a reduced ecological footprint. It results in ultra-low energy use and reduced utility bills for space heating and cooling. Buildings that meet this standard are also thermally comfortable with no cold drafts, and have extremely high air quality, free of toxins or mold.

The certifying organization in the U.S. for Passive House building is Passive House Institute U.S. (PHIUS). A Passive House certified building can be designed by anyone, but PHIUS recommends that a Certified Passive House Consultant (CPHC) participate in the design process. A CPHC is a qualified design professional that has undergone extensive training in Passive House design principles and passed a rigorous examination.
