The University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1977. In 1979, He joined D.G. Manning Construction Company as superintendent. He founded A. R. Chesson Construction Company, Inc. in 1981 to build residential and commercial buildings. In 1986, the company shifted its focus to entirely commercial and industrial buildings with its primary market area in Eastern North Carolina.
