Distant Hill Gardens and Distant Hill Nature Trail consist of one-hundred and twenty-five acres of biodiverse forest, fields, and wetlands straddling the town-line separating Walpole and Alstead. You will find us in the hills, five miles east of downtown Walpole, New Hampshire.

The Mission of Distant Hill Gardens and Nature Trail is to make nature and the outdoors accessible to everyone. We strive to inspire and empower children and adults, no matter their ability, to cultivate an intimate connection to the natural world through education, observation, and play, and to teach visitors the importance of nature-based play and recreation to their overall health and wellness.
The problem occurs because Distant Hill Gardens is located in two towns with the town line dividing it. Once you get to March Hill Road keep an eye out for 507 on our mailbox, about a quarter-mile from the east end of the March Hill Road. Take the first exit out of the second traffic circle. It is a right turn, just past the entrance to a 7/11 convenience store on the right (its more like straight ahead).
At Distant Hill Gardens and Nature Trail, we believe that humans can have a positive effect on Nature and our surroundings, but only if we proceed in a thoughtful and respectful manner. Our goal at Distant Hill is to encourage visitors to consider the impact they have on the environment in their daily lives and to teach them ways to make that impact a positive one.
On the first of each month, the Walpole, NH, Town Library installs a new Story Walk book on Distant Hill Nature Trail, with laminated pages of each book posted along the trail. And each page offers the reader a fun thing to do as they move from page to page. The StoryWalk helps build children's interest in reading while encouraging healthy outdoor activity for both adults and children.
It is in a section of the property we call 'White-Rock Woods'. It got its name from the native white quartz rocks that can be found throughout the 21-acre property. Unlike traditional playgrounds, nature play areas are outdoor spaces made of natural components such as bark, logs, plants, earth, rocks, and trees.
