As an Architect working on the Owner's side of non-profits, I am fortunate to work with Barba + Wheelock on three significant historic preservation projects: The Abyssinian Meeting House facade restoration at the Cumberland Club and clerestory restoration at Mechanics' Hall in Portland, all National Register properties.Barba + Wheelock are responsive and sensitive to their clients' needs and budgets.

For the Abyssinian Meeting House, B+W introduced specialized contractors to achieve excellence in masonry, historically-appropriate window construction (to replace plywood infill), structural improvements to the main floor, and 1828 plank flooring restoration.

Barba + Wheelock has extensive experience in the investigation and rehabilitation of historic and existing buildings. We have a history of successful performance on institutional projects; and familiarity with coordinating projects with preservation review entities, including the Maine Historic Preservation Commission and National Park Service.
A Conditions Assessment documents the condition of building materials, elements, and systems; identifies causes of deterioration; and provides prioritized recommendations for necessary preservation and repair work. A Conditions Assessment may be a succinct overview or an in-depth study involving a team of qualified consultants.
