Composite decking surfaces have improved over the past decade and multiple sources and colors are available. Many times the old deck needs to be rebuilt to remove dry-rot caused by moisture being trapped and the growth of fungus.
Repairs are best in pressure treated wood but existing wood can be protected by adding tape to the top surface. Composite decking is on average 7/8" thick and many old decks use 2x6 lumber that is 1.5" thick. Thus many older decks have floor joist set at 24 apart not the 26: on center required for a composite deck.
Such upgrades have to be factored in to the remodel cost. Stainless steel cables used for handrails have become very fashionable. They are modern looking and very open. The posts can be wood but we feel that destroys the look and add a maintenance issue. Normally the posts are aluminum with a given color selected including metallic as shown in the above photo.
