You need to understand your growing conditions to plan and install a successful flower garden. Are you wanting to plant a garden but unsure of where to start? Or, perhaps, you're feeling overwhelmed by the sheer number of beautiful shrubs, flowers, vines and other plants you see on the internet. A theme garden could be a great place to start.
There are hundreds of wonderful books on gardening, and, of course, the internet, which has thousands of sources of excellent information - mostly free - on every aspect of gardening. But all that information can be overwhelming if you are just beginning your gardening adventure. Here are a few simple but important questions to consider before you start digging; answering these questions will be time well spent in the long run.
Here's a typical plan of action I have been recommending for my clients to begin an organic sustainable lawn care program. 1. Less than 2% of the insects found in your backyard are pests. Most are considered beneficial. 2. Add organic matter to your lawn to build the soil - or spread an inch of compost in the fall, and water it in.
Soil is a Living Ecosystem The key to a healthy lawn and garden is healthy soil-a living, breathing ecosystem. The primary components of soil are minerals (inorganic materials), organic materials, water, and air. The organic matter improves the soil's capacity to hold water and nutrients, releasing them as needed by plants.
