Fall is quickly approaching, the lawns are starting to heal from the excessive heat this season. WATERING: The temps will be cooling off considerably and it is time to start weening the lawns off the summer watering schedule. If you are watering every other day, continue for another week or so and then reduce it by one day a week, if you are watering every day, it is time to go to every other day.
If the temps continue to drop, by the first of October you can water 1 day a week for a couple of weeks and then stop. If you stop watering all at once it shocks the lawn and can cause stress going into the winter. Weening your lawn off watering is much healthier for the grass. ROUTE INFO: We have a 1-2 days of round 4 left and we have started the last round.
For the next 5 weeks, we will be working hard to get everything done before Mother Nature gets nasty again. SPECIAL NOTE: Our bill is due the day of service and any bill not paid within 10 days will start to show on our past due report. Any properties with an outstanding balance will be suspended until the account is paid.

Services
Because the lawn must be active to absorb fertilizer first we must wait until the lawn is starting to green up. Then we work as fast as we can but we ALWAYS battle Mother Nature, i.e. wind and rain. Next we try to stay in route so some may see us in April while most will see us the first half of May.
Fertilizer MUST be applied at proper intervals and levels throughout the growing season. As few as three (3) applications will produce a pretty lawn but five (5) is optimum (never more than five because this can lead to disease). How much fertilizer and what type is dependent on Mother Nature. During cool months, the lawn wants the maximum healthy amount, but during hot months it can only handle a reduced amount without burning.
Step 1 - Prepare soil by tilling and leveling. Seed needs contact with dirt to grow and it's much easier to level the ground before the turf grows. Step 2 - Spread seed at approximately 4-5lbs per 1000 sq.ft. Perennial rye grass looks almost identical to Kentucky Bluegrass. So if you mix 10-20% perennial rye grass seed with Kentucky Bluegrass, it will germinate within a week protecting the bluegrass seed, which take 21-28 days to germinate.
Blades too short (less than 3 inches) reduce the amount of oxygen the grass can breath, the amount of food it can make and how much it can store. Blades too long (more than 4 inches) tend to lay over, making it difficult for the surface to get proper exposure to sun, air, and fertilizer. Blades that are mowed with dull blades basically beat the grass as opposed to actually cleanly cutting it, leading to stress.
Sprinkler systems will not freeze in April because it takes several weeks of freezing weather to develop frost deep enough. Lawns need at least 2 inches of water per week, preferably more especially depending on Mother Nature. In the fall, it is not recommended to just stop watering cold turkey but to wean the lawn off watering.
