Conterra Workshop is an architecture firm dedicated to design excellence, pragmatism, and sustainability. We seek spirited, holistic solutions for a wide range of projects. Our work reflects our sensitivity to the unique people and site that shape each project. Most importantly, our work reflects our ability to listen.
We believe the best architecture arises from the unique stories, dreams and craft of the people involved in its making. If we can capture these stories in the built work, the result is appropriate to the owner, expressive yet respectful in its environment, and often adaptable to future generations, rich in history.
Our process is collaborative. We create a comfortable atmosphere, encouraging open dialog through a process of continual inquiry and discovery. Collaboration yields broad solutions and helps unite and empower us - as designers, as builders, and as human beings.

Services
Collaboration is key. Our design process works from the broad to the specific. Early-on, hand sketches are quick & efficient and help aid visualization and encourage flexibility & input. We help owners feel comfortable guiding the design as, together, we seek a timeless, artful solution that meets their program and budget.
This home provides both living and working space for a couple whose children recently left home, allowing them to relocate from the city to the mountains. Set on a large, forested, and very private site, the home has spectacular views of the San Juan mountains. The owners were well-experienced in design and construction, and wanted to be involved in all aspects of the design/build process.
A contemporary home for an artist and craftsman, this mountain home provides both living and working space in a private forested setting, with views to the surrounding peaks. After a long career building luxury custom homes, the owner is now building his own custom home, conceived in three distinct volumes.
This modern house is in ever-changing conversation with its stunning mountain site. The house expresses the simple industrial materials from which it was made. Concrete and steel will rust and stain over time while glass reflects the dynamic shadows and light of the changing seasons. A raw steel frame carries the roof plane sixteen feet beyond the south glass wall, providing mountain views without glare and heat-gain in summer.
This 2500 sq ft home on a steep wooded lot is arranged around the primary view axis to Sneffels Peak, which was carefully set between two large "gunsight" trees. As a retirement home, the owners required that all primary functions exist on the main level. The walk-out lower level contains a large workshop, office, living/kitchenette and extra sleeping quarters.
