How does your company become the leader in designing and installing live and artificial plants on the largest cruise ships on the high seas? And then bring that flair for spectacular performance under adverse conditions ashore? For company principals, Debra Smeltzer and Jim Ziesler, it began with backgrounds in marine botany and marine geological research at the University of Texas.
In 1986, one year after Greensleeves opened, Smeltzer and Ziesler made an inspired presentation to design and install plants on the Windstar, a large five-star commercial sailboat. Greensleeves was awarded the contract because of the marine background both Smeltzer and Ziesler had.
When the Windstar installation was complete and the ship was preparing for its maiden voyage, the French architect Marc Held, who designed the ship, praised Greensleeves' problem-solving plant installations and floral arrangements, as "nothing short of extraordinaire."At that time, Sovereign of the Seas was the largest cruise ship ever to be built and the first to encompass a large lush outdoor garden as well as thousands of indoor plants.

That's how we look on every job: WOW! Whether our design objective is for restraint or exuberance, our aim is to be on-target for our client - with design, installation, budget and maintenance. We look for a WOW client reaction, and we almost always get it! Especially from everyone who sees Greensleeves plantings and orchids at our clients sites.
When Greensleeves create's a planting design for a space, we can draw on and use over one hundred different plants, trees and colorful blooming plants, including orchids; having the design and planting expertise to use them very, very well. Much of our plant material is as near as our nearby nursery-warehouse and all are premier quality plants grown by Greensleeves or specialty nurseries in Hawaii, California, Florida and South America.
There was a time when plant containers did just that. They contained the plant - held it and kept water from leaking out. But no more! A design revolution has come to containers. That means we can make our plant presentations much more colorful, dramatic or subtle - or you name it. Greensleeves now has access to literally hundreds of different container designs and are dealers for many manufacturers.
But there are so many places in a building interior where there isn't enough light for plants to survive and thrive. That's why Greensleeves's uses life-like preserved and artificial plants in low light locations. With today's state-of-the-art, simulated preserved natural plants look almost exactly like the real thing.
Greensleeves is proud of its outdoor achievements. From urban landscaping - plantings at building entrances, roof-top gardens and pool decks - to irrigation, fertilization and pest control. With our traditional passion, we have championed green landscaping for over 25 years always thinking of the environment and habitats of all areas.
