We take a holistic approach to creating unique environments that are relevant to their place and deeply responsive to our client's needs and desires. Our work embodies a fascination with the contrasting relationships of everyday life - inside/outside, public/private, technology/nature - through the innovative use of form, materials, and light.
Taking on creative projects at all scales; we have a particular interest in work that engages environment, craft, and community. Back in 1993, we - Daren and Lisa - met in the first year of studio while studying for our Masters of Architecture at the University of Washington. Degrees, jobs, a house, marriage, a dog, an historic industrial fishing complex, and a child followed.
We established chadbourne + doss architects in Seattle, 2001, and in Astoria 2002. With different backgrounds, experiences, and design perspectives; we work together in a genuine collaboration that is enlightened, investigative, thoughtful. Our designs always push through strong ideas to create beautiful, efficient, and inspiring environments.

Like many older homes, this 4,800 square foot brick manor turned its back on a park-like half acre lot in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood. With appreciation for the historic woodwork, craftsmanship and materials, we wanted to preserve history while transforming the home to connect indoor spaces directly to the expansive back yard.
This house is a complete remodel of one of iconic Seattle architect Fred Bassetti's earliest designs. The entry approach was redesigned with a cantilevered concrete landing in the sunken Courtyard and a large glass pivot door. All photography by Benjamin Benschneider. The relationship of interior to exterior space is enhanced with large sliding doors and celebrated with the creation of new outdoor spaces that extend out from the interior.
This new home was designed for a couple who found an empty lot and wanted to capitalize on lake and mountain views. All photography by Benjamin Benschneider. Constrained to a 32' wide footprint, windows open up to the east views and light while the sides of the house allow for privacy. To articulate the primary masses of the residence, a combination of clear cedar siding, and cement board siding was used.
5 years after the main house was built, our clients asked if they could add a separate studio for their guests. We designed and built a new structure that is separate but related. All photography by Benjamin Benschneider. We chose to align the structure with the north rear section of the main house with a 10' separation.
Located on a dense urban shoreline site, this residence is built on an existing daylight basement, and celebrates its setting while providing privacy to its family. All photography by Benjamin Benschneider. Bedrooms are located on the ground floor, with large sliding doors to provide privacy at night and openness during the day.

Very unprofessional. They answered the phone with a "hello?" I asked if this was chadbourne and doss architects to which they responded "yeah, who is this?" Went on to explain that they don't get involved with projects that are less than a $100k budget. All fine and well and I appreciated them being upfront, however it would have been more courteous to refer me to a smaller outfit.

How important is the architect in the "I'm going to build a house from scratch and I have never done this before" process? VERY. I would say it's the most important decision you will make.
My wife and I interviewed five architects/firms before choosing chadbourne + doss and during the interview process AND the building of our house we were struck by several things that set chadbourne + doss apart.
- You get a team. It's almost like hiring two for the price of one.
- They don't always agree. Which is good! If chadbourne + doss work it out, odds are super high you and
