The Swartz Nurseries was started in the 1860's as Swartz & Sons Fruit by John Jacob Swartz and his son, John F. Swartz. In the beginning we primarily specialized in growing fruit trees and fruit crops. Later in 1888 John F. Swartz took over the management of the business and the firm went into the growing of ornamental nursery stock and landscape work.
With his three sons, Harold, Roy, and Glenn; the firm expanded in the early 1900's. Lawn work, installation of rock gardens, growing of perennials and moving of large frozen ball shade trees increasingly became the main focus of the nursery. Glenn Swartz took over the management of the firm during the 1940's and the nursery began to specialize in the growing and installation of trees, shrubs and evergreens.
The nursery was also one of the largest growers of strawberries in the state in the late 1950's. Glenn's son, Dick Swartz, graduated from the UW Madison in 1963 with a degree in Landscape Architecture. He took over management of the firm in the late 1960's about the time the nursery was forced to move from its original location, where UW Parkside is, to its current Wood Road (30th Ave) location in Kenosha.

Services
We have a staff that is knowledgeable, educated, and customer friendly. Our personal service and quality sets us apart from the large chain and box stores. While many garden centers ship plants in from all over the country, our locally grown plant material will be adapted to your soils and climate for better transplanting success.
Groundcovers, perennials, vines & sod These are mostly small plants which are verysusceptible to moisture stress and winter injury after planting, over which we have no control. We can only warranty these plants to be healthy at the time of sale. Warranties do not cover acts of God, frost, drought, animals, insects, neglect or mechanical damage.
Because a successful home landscape depends on a good design and the right plants. A landscape must be designed to develop and improve as it ages. We often see plantings which look nice when first installed, but do not look attractive a few years later because the wrong types of plants were used for that situation and site.
The following instructions contain basic information on the care of our plant material. The biggest mistakes we find in plant care is watering too much and planting too deep. Please review these instructions and if you do have any questions or concerns regarding care and maintenance of plant material, please call us at the nursery.
Due to high demand, we are unable to accept any new quote requests at this time. We apologize for any inconvenience. We sincerely appreciate your interest, and will begin taking request again when we are fully staffed. Our top priority is to provide our customers with superior quality service. If your project is non-urgent, we would love the opportunity to work with you at a later date.

I had to cut down a large willow that looked lovely but had carpenter ants. I went to Swartz and fell in love with the London Planetrees and their large clump birches which are gorgeous. They have a lot of great trees and conifers. They planted everything for me and all is doing well with watering spikes 24 " that I bought off of amazon. You can also use green PVC pipe and drill the sides so water gets to your root properly . most of these root balls are huge: about 300-400lbs so you need to have the pvc ready and have a cap for watering. Put it on all three sides. Thats why I like the spikes

These guys are great! First off, they all clearly love what they do and have tons of knowledge so we we have been by there two years in a row for multiple plants. Everything is well taken care of and a lot of the plants are at a stage where its super safe to plant without having to do much work so you will pay a bit more, but it's totally worth it. My best friend even bought all the shrubs for her front yard and they are growing beautifully. I'd definitely recommend swartz to anyone who wants a great looking yard/garden.

Excellent mature trees at a fair price from a 160 year old local company. After touring the amazing property and meeting with the knowledgeable staff we picked out 3 beautiful specimens (dawn redwood, seven sun flower, and a princess Diana service Berry). They have a huge variety of unusual specimens far beyond what the big box stores have. The inventory is locally grown /acclimated which means these trees will grow in our WI climate. The large trees we bought were 10-18 feet tall and ranged in the $200-300 range but prices of course vary. It’s a $60 flat fee for delivery (I dug the holes and
