Sheridan County has recently discovered two invasive annual grasses, Ventenata and Medusahead, that have never been found in Wyoming nor the Great Plains Eco-region. These species are worrisome because they strangle local flora, promote dangerous wildfires, diminish diversity, and reduce wildlife habitat.
We have a wide selection of herbicides and pesticides to help control designated and declared noxious weeds and pests. County residents pay 50% of the total chemical cost (customers may not reside within city limits). We also provide mixing instructions and advice to make your treatments as effective as possible.
A seasonal spray crew with specialized spray equipment is equipped to handle rough terrain and specializes in large acreages infested with Leafy spurge and Saltcedar. The crew can be hired May through August. If you are interested in having your property sprayed, please contact us early as we have limited time available.
Biological control is introducing a naturally occurring predator to a pest. Here at SCWP, we use flea beetles (Aphthona lacertosa and Aphthona nigriscutis) in order to treat Leafy spurge infestations throughout the county. In late spring, the adults emerge and feed on the plant's leaf tissue. Almost immediately the females start laying eggs at the soil near the stem base.
Sheridan County Weed and Pest contracts aerial application of larvicide for mosquito control during the second full week of June, July, and August. The applications occur at daybreak, and the areas treated will be based on weather conditions and other factors. The major drainages, listed below, will be sprayed by a fixed wing aircraft targeting the standing water within 100 feet of each side of creeks and streams.
