Lava Rock walls create a high terrace overlooking the sea, where two arching domes lie surrounded by pool, terrace and gardens. Light filters through colorful stained glass walls and translucent roof panels.
With stunning visual aesthetics and luscious tropical surroundings, the compound affords ample privacy in which to swim, sunbathe, and enjoy the gardens, terrace, and 70 foot turquoise pool. A covered outdoor walkway connects the separate master bedroom, with private walled meditation garden, to the main structure, which holds two smaller bedrooms, bath, and fully equipped kitchen.

The Onion House is a favorite of many visitors! Rates average $495/night for 1 or 2 guests. Additional guests (3 or more) are $25 per person per night (Limit 6 guests total). Weekly cleaning fee of $395. Refundable security deposit of $500. VRBO Service Fee. Please note - to cover operating costs of the Onion House, we need to enforce these terms.

It's difficult to put into words just how amazing it really was. We had many activities planned for our trip to the Big Island, but cancelled them because we could not bring ourselves to leave this beautiful home.
Terri Watson serves as our booking manager and will work with you to make your reservation and answer your questions about your stay. The onsite team is led by Jeanne who oversees the crew and will be your on-island contact when you arrive. The Onion House is not suitable for families with young children (younger than 12) or for those who have difficulty with steps, due to safety considerations inherent in its design.
Global Architecture Magazine featured a 50-page retrospective of Kendrick Kellogg's buildings, including the Onion House. Futagawa spent his 60-year career as a photographer, editor, and publisher, depicting and interpreting the architecture and culture of Japan, as well as the architecture of leading designers from other countries.
Guests from around the world who choose to stay here help financially with this restoration project. As a landmark example of Organic Architecture, the Onion House deserves all the attention required to maintain it far into the future. The challenge is to increase the longevity of the materials so that the structure will last the next 100 years.
