How did a tree-hugging publisher/economist find himself fully immersed in the solar industry? It started with an "a-HAH" moment in 2009. I had just written my monthly ag-magazine column, this time about the effects of climate disruption, in which I calculated my own carbon footprint. It left me feeling pretty sad & frustrated.
When you think about it, it's true that farmers use solar panels every day in their fields. Every leaf of every crop is a solar panel, capturing the sun's power & converting it to a form of energy that the plant uses to grow. Solar panels on the roof of your barn mimic the action of a plant's leaves, converting the sun's power into energy YOU can use - electricity.
Industrial processes, more often than not, consumer large quantities of electricity, at great expense to the business. In more and more industries, including manufacturing, we are seeing that businesses are adopting solar power systems on site for self-generation of electricity. This not only reduces electricity costs, month by month, but it locks in those savings over the long term.
In fast, steady succession, progressive cities across Ohio, the U.S., and the world are embracing renewable energy, both to reduce their electricity expenditures AND to cut their carbon footprints.
