Chattanooga: Geothermal system relies on ground temperature to heat, cool share email print font size by Amy Williams Before this week, the layers of red clay and limestone stretching hundreds of feet down beneath the ground near the corner of Main Street and Rossville Avenue might have gone unnoticed.
This week, well diggers began drilling six 280-foot holes into the ground on Chattanooga's Southside, and the result could mean significant savings in energy costs for Greenspaces, a three-year, $2 million green building initiative backed by the Lyndhurst and Benwood foundations and RiverCity Co.

Geothermal heat pumps are heating and cooling systems that use the earth's relatively constant temperature to provide heating, cooling and water heating for homes and commercial buildings. Sometimes referred to as Ground Source heat pumps, geothermal systems are either open- or closed-loop systems and can be installed vertically, horizontally, and even in an existing pond or lake.
An exciting new tax credit is now available for home and commercial building owners who install geothermal heating and cooling systems through the Energy Improvement and Extension Act of 2008 (H.R. 1424). H.R. 1424 offers a onetime tax credit of 30% of the total investment for homeowners who install residential ground loop or ground water geothermal heat pumps.
