Services
For this vacation home used a few times a year, the space needed to feel comfortable and contained, whether two people were staying or seven (including several grandchildren). The home also needed to allow for cocktail parties and casual dinners for 30 or more guests at a time. The client is interested in all types of art so I chose soulful handwoven fabrics and locally crafted wood and metal furniture.
The entryway, centered by a reflection pool, signals the openness of a Balinese-influenced home. Sculptural chaise lounges soften the angular lines of rooftop and courtyard. Inside, we focused on capturing light. Low swivel seating-emphasizing our close relationship to the earth-offers the residents a full view to the outside.
As a geologist, the materials were critical for the client. Guided by a rosewood panel from the client's travels, we contrasted the warmth of the cherry wood tub face and Tansu cabinet with the grounding qualities of the split-faced marble shower walls. The combination is ideal for a bathroom: a tranquil sanctuary balanced by the smell of oiled teak and the purity of stone.
In renovating two villas, one a primary residence and the other for guests, our objective was to maintain their original integrity. Inspired by Mauna Kea, we integrated lava steps and kept our color palette muted-to merge with the "white mountain." From bedroom to bath to kitchen, we focused on the elements of line, scale and texture, to reflect the awe-inspiring setting just steps away.
After completing her degree in Interior Design from the University of Georgia, Nancy Gilleland spent 18 years in Kona, Hawaii, before returning to Georgia, where she now lives and works. During her childhood in Georgia, Nancy discovered the beauty of layering old and new in a room. In Hawaii, her design projects were influenced by island architecture and lifestyle, as well as the cultures of Japan, Indonesia and the Pacific Islands.
