Spat's Splats
Raised in rural Ohio, the parents of Steven Spathelf recognized his artistic talent as a young child. He started painting at the age of 8 under the direction of Ethel Berlin. He received additional formal training at Bowling Green State University in Ohio & Kendall School of Design (later to become Kendall College of Art & Design) in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Soon after moving to the Tampa Bay area of Florida 30 years ago, Steve started to paint professionally. His first murals were on children's walls in the homes of friends. He then later presented his portfolio to interior designers & obtained commissions to paint hundreds of murals in the area's finest communities.

His wall paintings impress the viewer with their realism, a technique known as "trompe l' oeil", a French term meaning "to deceive the eye". Many clients have some idea of what the subject matter is to be for their project, such as a scene from a favorite vacation spot. Others ask for guidance as to what would be most appropriate for the site.
Services
Steve has built a reputation for excellence, integrity and unsurpassed designs. Steve creates signature custom wall finishes, to meet the color and design preferences of his clients, including hundreds of one-of-a-kind hand-painted finishes in faux-marbles and exotic wood-grains, historical murals and fine art, italian frescos and decorative stencils.

Had wanted an orange scene on a plaque to put on my newly painted home. i contacted stephen and he came to the house to mease the area for the plaque and took my sample picture with him. we discussed the colors to use to compliment the house colors and the orange color to compliment our new front door. he so professional and courteous and listened to what we were looking for, he used a special board that would hold up to weather conditions and used the paint colors we asked for from sherwin williams paint and he had someone with him to mount the painting on our home. his prices were very reasonable

Apparently many moons ago, this guy decided to randomly paint a sun-kissed orange on a building in downtown Dunedin. Everyone wanted to know who did it, and as the mystery grew, the local papers got in on the action demanding the mystery muralist make himself known. Soon after, businesses along Main Street began putting signs up that read, "put an orange here!" And that's how the story of the seemingly random oranges around Dunedin began.

We just moved here about a month ago, and one of the first questions I had was, "What is the freaking deal with the oranges? Is one
