Barber McMurry Architects
The studio is the heart of our office because we're devoted to design - functional, collaborative, creative, and sustainable. Great design doesn't just come naturally. It's the way we work. We challenge one another to constantly improve.

Our unique cross-functional approach teaches us best practices across different markets, allowing us to bring new perspectives to architecture, interior design, master planning, programming and sustainable design. We're a family and a team, recognized in 2020 as an AIA Tennessee Outstanding Emerging Professional Friendly Firm.

All of that melds in our studio, where we design lasting, distinctive, and efficient buildings that create the community we call home. Our projects are testament to that, with our peers in the profession recognizing our work with more than 90 design awards in the last 20 years. Our passion for design says a lot about us, but it ultimately benefits the people who work, live, and play in the spaces we've designed.
Services
In 1915, BarberMcMurry Architects was founded in Knoxville by Ben McMurry and Charles I. Barber, son of famed residential architect George Barber. Over the past century, BarberMcMurry has designed dozens of the most iconic and distinctive buildings in East Tennessee - from Charles Barber's Beaux Arts inspired designs to mid-century modern to today's progressive and modern styles.
For us, that's a concise way to say a big thing - that we try our hardest, in every aspect of our business, to make our community a better and more beautiful place, in every way. We're architects and interior designers, so that means that we understand that our buildings impact their surroundings. We design sustainably and locally.
We are passionate about giving back to the community - supporting nonprofits and civic organizations across the region through pro bono design, service and charitable giving. At the University of Tennessee, the firm has funded a portion of the BarberMcMurry Endowed Design Professorship at the UT School of Architecture + Design, in partnership with the estate of the firm's founder, Charles I. Barber.
