If your ac is not cooling enough, the two easiest and most important things you can do on your own are: change your filter and clean your outdoor condenser. See #2 and #3 below. If these two things do not remedy the problem, call for service. Note: there is a possibility that your ac system may be doing all it can do during extreme heat conditions.
Study up - Find out about license and insurance requirements for contractors in your state. And before you call a contractor, know the model of your current system and its maintenance history. Also, make note of any uncomfortable rooms. This will help potential contractors better understand your heating needs.
Most air conditioners have their capacity rated in BTUs, or British Thermal Units. A BTU is, generally, the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one pound of water one degree F. Specifically, a BTU is 1,055 joules, but the first definition is easier to understand in real-life terms. One "ton", in heating and cooling terms, is 12,000 BTUs.

I love these people. I've had several of their workers and the owner on my property to do various HVAC things over the last six years. Recently we put our house up for sale and moved across country. We got a contract on the house and that's when the fun started. The buyers agent decides to play games. To make a long story short, my wife and I were put into an almost impossible situation if it was not for Josh and his team. I had three days to move mountains but I was not there to do so. Brian Bitter has provided HVAC service for us several times now and we could not be happier with his professionalism and the quality of his work! This company was suggested by my home warranty. They arrived and we're very knowledgeable however that's where the service stopped.
This company will price gouge you. Not just the 25% that they claim for the mark up but 250%.
That is just for an a $50 air filter they are charging $295 for. The rest of the invoice was worse.
When I received the invoice I was shocked. When I called for explanation the person I spoke with was forceful and rude defending the company's pricing. Stating they needed to make a profit and that I could use someone else but it would not be done correctly.
I do not discount

These guys were absolutely amazing! From scheduling with Laura to Ryan coming out for the service, they went above and beyond. Ryan came out for a work order on my whole-home humidifier; told me exactly what was wrong, what the parts would cost to fix it vs. a new system. He was professional and polite and worked quickly. Not that anyone hopes to need a HVAC tech in the future, but these guys will be my go-to!
