David M. Schwarz Architects (DMSAS) is a design firm that sees architecture as both a service and an art. The central tenet of our work is crafting sustainable, human-centered places in stewardship of our public realm; it is a philosophy we have studied and developed through our planning and design projects in urban environs since our founding.
We established DMSAS in 1978 in Washington, DC, which is still the location of our sole design studio. The firm employs an architectural staff of 35. Our earliest work was focused within the numerous historic districts of Washington, D.C, and many of our core beliefs are a direct outgrowth of this experience.
We learned early on how buildings relate and positively contribute to their surroundings, and the defining role architecture can play in creating memorable institutions and truly sustainable neighborhoods that foster a genuine sense of humanity, community and common purpose.

Services
Our goal is the most appropriate solution-the one that best solves the problem at hand. We believe design is a fluid exchange and a shaping of ideas between client and architect-it is iterative and it is interactive. There can be no predetermined solutions. In Discovery, we work with the client to define the program, budget, scope and quality expectations.
Over time, the term "studio" has come to mean a collection of people, rather than a hive of creative collaboration. At DMSAS, we hold fast to tradition. Our design studio is a true studio; a wide-open, organic environment where project teams almost literally live together. This spirit of discovery and team work is continued outside of the office, as our team uses Washington, DC as a living laboratory to study, explore and create.
It is an honor to have received dozens awards over our nearly four decades of design and planning work across the country. A selection of these accolades is humbly presented below. While we are appreciative of the recognition, the best award will always be the public's embrace of our work. We do not design with the intent of making an award-winning statement, but instead strive to deliver a building the public will love.
David M. Schwarz Architects is preparing the next generation of architects and planners, at all levels of their education. We have supported childhood education and college preparatory programs in the building arts, including relationships with the Phelps School in Washington, DC. Since 2000, David M. Schwarz Architects has sponsored an annual summer Internship & Traveling Fellowship Awards program.
