Levitch Associates is a three-generation family business delivering combined architecture and construction services for residential and commercial projects. We have helped to improve the homes and businesses of hundreds of clients since 1960. Levitch has experience in everything from remodeling one area of a home, to major remodels, additions, and designing and building new custom homes.
Our people make us who we are today, from our founder to three generations of Levitch family members and employees. While in Jerusalem in 1948 to help build the new state, Ed met a man who had graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, and who convinced Ed to enroll in the Architecture program there.
Levitch Associates offers full design/build services from architecture through construction for residential and light commercial projects. We are both architects and general contractors with a depth and breadth of experience in the greater Berkeley area and beyond. Our work is inherently "green" as we are typically transforming existing spaces into ones that work better for our clients.
Levitch earned the highest rating for client satisfaction from the Houzz online community in its annual awards. Levitch Associates earned a place in Qualifed Remodeler's 2020 Top 500 list of remodeling firms, our 12th year in the Top 500! If you want a quality project run by ultimate professionals, Levitch is the design/build company for your project. They designed and rebuilt our mid-60's home from the floor up. They made the process as comfortable as possible and worked with us every step of the way. When the city contractor reviewed and closed the permits, he said the work was the best he had seen in 30 years of performing inspections. We love Maurice, Vuk, Susan and the entire Levitch team. Totally not a good experience with this company. I called and talked to Elizabeth Brown early in the week briefly describing the job. She told me that she would review and get back to me later that week or early the following week. I heard nothing. I called the following Wednesday. She said the exact same thing. By this time I noticed the tone in her voice like she was not interested in my project. I finally get an email confirming that the company was not interested in my project. Levitch Associates redesigned and rebuilt the front of my home on Byron St in Berkeley. I got a team of skilled professionals who started with the sit down with architects Maurice and Edward Levitch knocking ideas around over coffee at Nations in El Cerrito. Once the design was final and approved Levitch Associates took the project through to completion. No fuss, no muss on my part.

Maurice (and his father Ed) designed and built a kitchen remodel/addition for us about 17 years ago; the design and execution of the work is a wonderful fit for our 1923 Berkeley home.
Over the years, a number of minor issues have arisen; Maurice was unfailingly prompt, complete, and fair in addressing these issues.
We recently noted a more significant issue that needed remediation; in spite of the many years that had elapsed since the construction, Maurice went well above what is required of a contractor in California in addressing this issue, all with a minimum of fuss and a maximum of openness

I called Levitch for a very last minute request (next day!) for a consultation on a home we were in contract on (Upper Rockridge area) and with only 24 hours to complete our inspections. I needed to get an opinion and estimate on some repairs ASAP - Maurice squeezed us in with little notice and was terrific. He dug into the blueprints, inspected the problem areas closely, and even talked to the architect who had built the house fifteen years earlier! I would definitely hire him if we had a bigger project that his firm would take (we only have a few specific fixes), he was super nice and helpful

We chose Levitch for a garage design/build because of their stated ability to get things permitted and built in Berkeley, which can sometimes be challenging. Our project had one obvious permitting challenge, which we stated up front in our first meeting with Maurice and staff. A few conversations later, Maurice assured us that he had the right conversations with Berkeley staff for approval.
Several thousand dollars later we had a design (mediocre in my opinion) and plans to submit to the city. And the city promptly (well, not promptly, but eventually) informed us that, if we did not withdraw

I've worked in and around the construction industry for thirty years and have worked with Levitch on a number of construction projects for the last 15 or so. Maurice Levitch arrived at our house (Casa Canine) several years ago after allowing us to tour his own home in a local "green tour." We loved his thoughts for our very green remodel.
We appreciated the fact that both Maurice and his father Edward are well-known architects in the Berkeley community. We also appreciated his "soup-to-nuts" approach to construction which includes architectural design, construction, advice on financing and rebates *and* (this is the clincher) the opportunity to put a "Levitch" sign in front of our home for the duration of construction
