Smart Architecture
Website
Smart Architecture is a process and technology driven architecture firm established by architects and engineers who have worked at the interface of digital technologies and the architecture and construction industry for over thirty years. Beginning at SOM in the 1980's, at Frank Gehry's office in the 1990's, and on major buildings worldwide in the last decade, we have continued to advance the art of digital modeling, now evolved into BIM.

We know computers and we know buildings. Smart Architecture applies digital technology to building design and construction. We design and develop buildings as well as consult with architects, artists, engineers, builders and owners, to explore designs and manage the documentation and construction process through a 3D database.

On projects of diverse scales, ranging from artwork to infrastructure, our services harness the potential of the digital database to enhance understanding, visualization and coordination, resulting in better design and more economical and productive execution.
Services
We construct 3D digital models, from simple sketch and surface models to complete virtual buildings with structure, materials and assemblies. We organize models intelligently, so that subsets of the geometry can be extracted for structural and mechanical design, wind, energy and fire studies, feasibility and sequencing, and other needs of consultants, authorities and contractors.
The digital model is tool for design and a record of the developing project. Beginning with a surface or solid model of a building envelope, adding backup and support systems, developing construction details - useful information from the design team and contractors is continually added. At the same time, we work to simplify the forms and details.
The computer model is a useful tool for coordinating information across the project team. Consultants working in 3D visualize a design much more completely than by drawings alone, and often the best way to coordinate a complicated assembly is to build the structural and mechanical systems in the model.
In the end, digital information must be turned into a physical building: the design has to be communicated to the construction team. There must be a simple but complete explanation of how the building goes together, so the contractor can understand the project's complexities and not escalate costs from fear of the unknown.
