K.L. (Ken) Bellar started in the car business when he opened a small towing operation in the 1950s. He named the business Abal because it was the first name under towing in the Amarillo phone book at the time. He began buying some of the cars he towed and repairing them to sell. In 1964, he turned the wrecking yard into a used car lot; keeping the same business name he had already established.
Although he is "retired", he still enjoys coming to work every day and visiting with his family and the customers over a cup of hot coffee. When he is not at the dealership; Ken enjoys teaching his Sunday school class at Bolton Street Baptist Church and traveling with his wife, Mary. Kenney Bellar has been with Abal Auto Sales since 1981, when he left Pioneer Gas Co. to join the family business.
Kenney is a graduate of Caprock High School (1974) in Amarillo. He married his high school sweetheart, Peggy in 1975. They have two children; Chris (who lives in Colorado Springs with his wife Julee and their three sons) and Wendi (who is currently at Texas A& M completing her Ph.
