Services
Our firm believes that exceptional design connects people with space and with each other. We create meaningful spaces with a modern aesthetic by recognizing structure, the balance between interior and exterior, and the relationship of a site with its architecture, regardless of its size or complexity.
Design of buildings, structures and sites form the core of our practice. Our projects include education institutions, commercial enterprises, non-profits, governmental buildings, private residences, and more. In addition to new construction, a substantial part of our practice engages existing buildings to renovate and enhance space and to add new area to existing structures, including historic structures.

We had watched and visited projects of theirs and were impressed by their attention to detail, mid-century modern sensibility and use of sustainable materials and energy efficient systems and processes. The Mathison team was more than my wife and I could have hoped for. They helped us with design ideas, but they also listened to our ideas and helped made them work, and they had creative storage ideas for our open communal space. They even helped with ideas about sustainability and energy efficiency as we were trying to be the first house to achieve a "Living Build Challenge" home in Grand Rapids, MI. Their team came out and took accurate measurements of our old falling apart house from 1896, and they quickly came back with the drawings. The house turned out beautifully!

My wife and I purchased a 1955 ranch with the intent to begin a major renovation and add-on to the original house. Mathison worked to develop a concept, floor plan, and structure around our goals and preferences embracing the project all along the way. When we came to terms with the fact that the existing structure should be removed, Mathison modified and improved the design. Always available and extremely responsive Mathison listened to us at every step. In the end, we couldn't be happier. The house fits us perfectly and the design is stunning.

They understand the critical aspects of dialogue and exploration about new concepts and I have witnessed them practice these in every interaction.
