Principals Brad Gunkel and Brianne Steinhauser, along with numerous members of our staff, have long-standing experience in civic engagement and community-oriented design.Prior to founding Gunkel Architecture, Brad managed McCammant & Durrett, the leading co-housing firm in the United States.
Brianne's background includes many years designing, managing, and constructing affordable housing, numerous years as an affordable housing developer, and participation as a volunteer and board member with a number of local non-profit organizations.We encourage our staff to be involved in the causes they are passionate about and to be leaders regardless of their experience level within the industry.

Over the last few years, I have worked with Gunkel Architecture on multiple rehab and new construction multifamily projects and I have been very impressed with the quality of their work, the firm's dedication to schedule, and their commitment to client satisfaction.

We are satisfied clients of Gunkel Architecture. We enlisted their services to design a remodel of our 1940 bungalow in El Cerrito. Brad Gunkel was warm and approachable. His past work matched our desire to create a new home using sustainable material, is comfortable, and modern. He and his team quickly came up with a design meeting our needs. He suggested sources to look for fixtures/tiles. He followed building code requirements in our city and made visits to our city’s permit department to ensure all permits were in place. Brad is a skilled pro, and he was quick to resolve issues as they arose
