Our good friends at Sustainable NW Wood recently posted a blog about the Portland Audubon Marmot Cabin project that we gratefully had the opportunity to collaborate on. We are excited to announce that a Harka project was recently featured in Fine Homebuilding Magazine. The piece focuses on how we creatively created a legal loft space inside the ADU while overcoming the challenges of the building codes.
When we were approached by Redfin.com to contribute our thoughts as to what makes a home timeless, we were immediately excited. Our natural focus on sustainability made this easy. We are so excited about our latest interior creation: a super cool wine bar in the Pearl! A huge thank you to the owners of Bar Diane for making this happen.
They are amazing people that were TRULY a pleasure to work with. As you can see from the murals, Sami is an extremely talented artist which helped take the space to the next level. Congrats to Joshua Jewett in our office for a job well done. Insider Information: If you peek through the slats in the fence outside, you can still see the parking sign painted on the concrete wall from the long lost Gypsy Lounge.

Services
Harka was founded with an inquisitive spirit and lofty objective: to create beautiful and inspiring spaces that possess the lowest carbon footprint possible while empowering their inhabitants to live environmentally responsible and toxin-free lifestyles. Using existing carbon data, toxicology information, and life style analyses, our team makes informed decisions when designing spaces and specifying materials.
We can help you design and permit a project from scratch or retrofit an existing building. We are also available to help you get an existing project legalized or help push through a project that is currently hung up in permitting. And we can be there for general consulting to coach you through the design and permitting processes.

Patrick did a complicated project for us with the City of Portland for a commercial building. He ended up saving us a ton of money by working with city to do an alternate plan that they actually accepted! He was a pleasure to work with and very professional. Kept communicating with us throughout the project and answered all of our questions we had. Helped come up with ideas to minimize our overall cost. Would work with him again in a heartbeat!

We have used Harka for a couple of our remodeling projects in the past. Patrick and his team have always done an amazing job. Their attention to detail, professionalism and ultimately providing what we wanted has always brought us back. Patrick's style and environmental conscious building & design practices make him stand out from other architecture firms we looked at. I highly recommend Harka as an architectural design firm.

Patrick, Tammy, and the crew at Harka did an awesome job for us on our overwhelming project!
They helped with every aspect of our process, had answers for everything, and helped guide us in the right direction. I really appreciated that they were always available and always had a good solution for any issue that would come up! You're in good hands with this crew of good people!

We worked with Harka on our two story ADU/garage conversion. It took us awhile to make the jump and Patrick was patient with our project. They were very knowledgeable about city codes and internal processes which helped us get more out of our footprint and not waste time. It turned out beautifully and we wouldn't hesitate to work with them again!

Harka Architecture worked with us from the initial concepts of our addition to the final completion of the last coat of paint on the house by the contractor. They were meticulous, always in touch during the project, informed us on specifics or changes as the project was underway, helped keep our contractor close to the project time-line and plans, and overall were very pleasant to deal with. At no time did we feel dissatisfied or in-the-dark. The entire project from initial draft plans of the project to the very end was smooth. Definitely would hire Harka for our next project.

Patrick and the Harka team were truly awesome. Our project at Portland Audubon was to remake our summer camp / outdoor school facility. We worked in two phases over five years (our delays, not theirs). The first phase was to build two giant yurts for dorms and upgrade the parking, fire suppression, and septic infrastructure to accommodate a growth in capacity from 20 to 60 students. Patrick helped us through the permitting process and created living quarters that thrill kids.
In the second phase we turned a small shack into a beautiful cabin. It was a major upgrade while at the same time

Patrick, Tammy and their team are superb to work with. They recently helped me with an industrial finish out project. Additionally, they were able to help me get a permit to fully convert a pre manufactured structure into a fully permitted and occupiable space. I was told by Development Services that this would be "nearly impossible" to get done, but Harka made it happen! They removed much of the headache of dealing with The City of Portland.

I hired Patrick back in 2009 to help build a 1700 sq ft art studio and ADU. Needless to say, this was a tricky build (well, the city of Portland makes all buildings "tricky" but that's a subject for another day). Suffice to say, without Patrick, the project would never have happened. With a killer recession at hand, I had to find all sorts of clever ways to keep costs low - Patrick's design played a major role in making things happen beautifully and affordably. I've hired him more than a few times since then, which is the real measure of a professional.

Patrick helped me with the final phase of a 12 year home remodeling project. He had the task of tying all of the various phases of the project together in this final stage. There were many tricky issues with making the second story addition look architecturally correct, how the roof lined up, structural issues and bringing the utilities to the second floor. He had to visit the site on various occasions during the build out to help massage difficulties the builders were having executing the plan. From design and planning to permitting and building, Patrick's advise and counsel were invaluable

I hired Patrick Donaldson in 2006 for the renovation of a 4,500-sf, two story, wood framed commercial building, constructed in 1911. After design, planning and permitting I kept Patrick on as the construction administrator, which included assisting me with contractor relations, making in-field decisions and design solutions, inspecting contractor's work, reviewing contractor's submissions of material choices, and anything else I needed during construction. Without Patrick the completion of this project would not have been possible and would likely have been much more painful, as building projects

I'm working with Harka on the plans for my ADU. They have been super professional and a pleasure to work with. They've taken important design considerations into account like passive heating and cooling and some thoughtful eco-friendly elements. They've made the design process enjoyable, and helped me navigate through the extremely elaborate process of taking a vision and pulling the concept through to being ready to permit and begin construction. I'd definitely recommend them!
