Welcome, and thank you for taking the time to find Hamilton/Roberts Designs Fine Woodworking! For 35+ years Michael Hamilton and Dee Roberts have been handcrafting high quality, elegant wood boxes, along with cabinets and shelves for the wall and even urns (for pets too), using many domestic, rare and exotic woods here in Boise, Idaho.

By "handcrafted" we mean that we use traditional methods and standard woodworking tools - table saw, planer, jointer, etc, along with many hand tools. No CNC machines, lasers or other computer aided tools, no outside contractors or pre-made parts. Heck, at the end of the process we even hand sand, hand rub out with very fine steel wool and hand polish with a cotton cloth.

Our trademark seems to be the gently domed lid and the slightly tapering sides - not flat and not square as most boxes are. What kind of boxes? Beautiful, unique, elegant, dare we say heirloom boxes? We think so and hope our visitors will too. Our customers certainly seem to agree.
Services
Hamilton/Roberts Designs Woodworking is actually a husband and wife team (Michael Hamilton and Dee Roberts) that has been pursuing a livelihood in woodworking for about thirty years. After receiving our BFA degrees from California College of the Arts in Oakland in Ceramics (Michael) and Painting and Drawing (Dee), we taught ceramics and art classes and operated a pottery and ceramic sculpture studio in Walnut Creek, California for several years.
We will be participating in the following juried art shows in 2021 if they take place! The pandemic has obliterated almost every show. Sign up for our newsletter to be notified of any changes. We are cutting back on our outdoor shows - we both turned 70 last year so prefer to stay home and sell our work right here on our website!
The very bottom of all our work, the surface that we sign and write what woods are being used, is birch ply. You'll probably look at this surface a couple of times then ignore it for years so there is no reason to have the bottom panel solid wood. Ply is much more stable too. Please note that the Large Double Decker (bottom left) is 3" wider and 1" deeper (front to back.)
We are often asked about our woodworking techniques and finishing routine. No mysteries here. We use standard woodworking tools but are working in a very small studio (under 400 sq ft!) so must often keep that in mind when getting new tools. Second newest tool: the Wixey Digital Angle Gauge Fantastic - why didn't someone make this years ago?

My wife and I love their work! We got a tour of their studio and were impressed by the time they took and the attention to detail in helping us choose the woods and patterns that were to my wife’s liking. Excellent craftsmanship and excellent people! Thanks!
