Checkmate Construction founder Norman Wilson is a second-generation contractor. He moved to Ocala in 1976 to work in the equine industry, breaking two-year-old horses. He became a trainer, and later manager at some of Marion County's largest horse farms, including the legendary Wycombe House Stud, home to 1996 Preakness Winner Louis Quatorze.
