I am Terri Pocock and my husband is Rick Pocock. We are the very proud owners of Swede Chimney Sweep & Dryer Vent Cleaning. We didn't start out as chimney sweeps. In fact, even as young adults, we never imagined that we would be in this industry and we never imagined that we would love our jobs as much as we do!
In 2000, the National Fire Protection Agency, also known as the NFPA, revolutionized the way the chimney industry performed chimney inspections. In the NFPA 211 Standard, they developed specific guidelines for inspecting chimneys by establishing a three-tier inspection system-Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3.
It is not uncommon for original dampers to become non-operational with age. The purpose of a damper is to close off the flue pipe and to reduce heat loss from the home during the winter and air conditioning during the summer. Once the original damper is seized, it is not always possible to get it operational again.
These terms can be used interchangeably. Because of strict animal protection regulations, removing certain kinds of birds is illegal and subject to heavy fines if we were to remove the birds because we don't have a special animal removal permit required by law. In this case, we can refer you to a wildlife rescue service.
Heat shields date back to the 15th century in Europe for wood-burning open fireplaces, when they were called fire backs. Most were constructed from an iron casting and were decorated with various designs. Beautiful ornate fire backs from Europe can still be found today. During the colonial times in the United States, cast iron fire backs were quite common.

Rick and Kyle just completed cleaning out or chimney. They did a great job and would recommend them.
Rick inspected the chimney and let us know the assessment. Then they laid down floor covering and brought in their tools to clean. Lastly, Rick checked our chimney gas valve for leaks and re-chalked the capped line.
Both were very professional and courteous. Will have them do our rental property as well.
Terri responds quickly via email and provides plenty of information.

I contacted Swede Chimney Sweep right before Christmas. We've had issue with our fireplace for years. Terri was AWSOME!!! She took a long time talking to me and explaining me everything in details. I live in a 9 unit townhouse complex and several members of our HOA had been given confusing and mixed information from two chimney sweeps about the condition of our chimneys. Terri was awesome with communication. Advised me to call back in the summer which of course I didn't. She still found time to squeeze me in their busy schedule. Rick showed up & was very honest & informative. Told me I didn't need a chimney sweep. Also, before he put the cap on our chimney he told me we need some masonry work done & they can put the cap on when they do the work. I just purchased a condo with a fireplace and wanted it inspected, even though I didn't plan to use it. During the inspection, we learned of the possibility that the fire place was actually installed incorrectly many years ago and needed more work that was out of their scope. They made sure my fireplace was safe for the time being, and recommended a specialist for me to contact.

Terri was awesome on the phone (and with follow up) and Rick's checkup on both a wood-burning and gas fireplace was thorough and professional. He gave honest opinions on condition and wasn't trying to upsell on anything. I trusted his opinion completely. I'm looking forward to having them back in two years. Even though they came over to inspect our fireplace, the end result was that our fireplace didn't require cleaning and they made a suggestion to install a fireplace guard to lower the height of the fireplace opening to help with the smoking problem. They left and said they weren't going to charge us, which caught me by surprise. I wanted to give them a tip for at least taking the time to visit our property but they left quickly and I didn't get a chance to. On top of that, they provided an email confirmation prior to the appointment that was
