In these uncertain times, we're all doing our best to adjust. We are considered essential home services under the current shelter-in-place order, so we are still operating. However, due to the health threat, we have adjusted our practices significantly. We sanitize doors and remote controls and maintain the distance recommended.
The truth is there is no rule in regards to how often a chimney needs to be swept. Some choose to do it once per month, while others do it once every 10 years. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends that vents, chimneys and fireplaces be inspected at least once per year and if necessary, you might need a repair done, maintenance or a cleaning.

UPDATE: to three stars after finally receiving a call from Mr Chimney. They ordered a part and will have it installed when it gets here. Trying times with supply chain being backed up so they're busy and everything's back ordered. To be updated when the fireplace is finally repaired.

My technician was Robert and he was so wonderful to work with. Very respectful and professional gentleman. After fixing my gas fireplace, he thoroughly cleaned and vacuumed everything. Then he showed me how to operate the fireplace since it was my first time owning one. I'm super pregnant so easily forgetful, but Robert didn't mind going over the steps not twice but three times... My only minor complaint would be the cost for replacement part (like a 1 foot pipe) was a little pricy. Other than that, I highly recommend Mister Chimney/ Nova Fireplaces, and thank you, Robert! The workers arrived on time, repointed a section of the outside of our chimney & cleaned up after themselves. They looked things over carefully & repointed more than I even noticed. They were also very nice. The chimney looks great & more importantly is sealed against water damage. I highly recommend this company. Very fair prices, excellent work & excellent communication. I would certainly use them again if I need anything chimney related.

Never went on the roof to inspect the cap to see if it was secure and needed cleaning. Insisted that everything could be done with the brush from inside along with the vacuum. $190 and was in and out within 30 minutes. Said I needed three new refractories at $850 each. I got three from the fireplace manufacturer for $456. Draw your own conclusions!

Mister Chimney reconstructed my chimney, which was loose and unsafe when we first bought our house. Instead of rebuilding with brick reinforced with rebar, we decided to make a structural change and install a class A flue pipe with wood framing and veneer brick on the outside. From our research, this is supposed to be more safe during an earthquake. Most of the framing is lighter and more flexible than standard brick, and the veneer brick is much lighter than an actual brick (so, it doesn't do nearly as much damage if it falls onto the roof). Very happy with the job that Nova Fireplaces did for SenSpa. Our unique gas fireplace was in bad need of cleaning/repair and is quite tricky. We had tried several companies who would not attempt the job. Erik Johnson, the sales manager, did a GREAT job researching our fireplace and coming up with the solution which some other companies did not want to take on the task. He ordered a part so we could refresh the system since we were opening it up, just to make sure we would not need a repair in the future and make it look new again - which is does. The process from start to finish was very professional. Always called in advance to confirm appointments. Installed new chimney crown, cap and damper. Also cleaned chimney and inspection. Cleaned up afterwards and no mess. I would highly recommend for my next project. I now have a fully working fireplace.

After doing some research, I decided to go with Nova Fireplaces to replace our purely decorative gas fireplace.
For our insert, Erik suggested the Liberty L234.
After after about 2 months, the insert arrived and was professionally installed.

Or more like, nearly three years since I was reviewing. BUT. I told my technician that I would post a review and HERE I AM. I'm in SF! And I have a chimney! That needed cleaning!
Martin was great! Punctual - even arriving early, after calling me first to see if that was OK - and he was masked the whole time. The chimney apparently hadn't been cleaned for 6 or 7 years. Yikes. That was a LOT of cobwebs. Anyway, Martin was friendly, professional, and very patient with my totally-clueless-about-chimneys questions.

We tried to buy a fireplace insert from Nova fireplaces but they didn't seem interested in the business. They have a great range and things started off well with a very professional site visit, but then we went into the showroom. They were complaining how busy they were and then we were ghosted when we asked for the final quote. Despite email follow ups we got no replies so had to go somewhere else and start the process again.

NOVA Fireplaces helped diagnose and repair a 40 year old gas fireplace insert. The gas valve had failed. Other companies were 6 to 8 weeks out.
NOVA technicians determined the problem and solution and installed a new gas valve. It took a couple of visits, but they persisted until the system was working properly again. The technicians were COVID safe, prompt, courteous, and methodical. I would recommend and certainly work with them again.

Mister Chimney has serviced our wood burning fireplace in San Francisco the last 4-5 years. Today they retrofitted the firebox as the original was past its useful life and this a fire hazard. They were on time, used appropriate PPE and Covid protocol, efficient with their work and left everything spotless.

Evy and Martin from Mister Chimney was awesome. Martin arrived early, was super friendly, bilingual (which was perfect because he was able to explain to my husband in Spanish everything we need to know), and kept our white carpets clean! Evy helped me schedule a chimney cleaning and inspection over phone and text and was super responsive. Overall fast, painless and professional and this has been on my to-do list forever. Can't wait to have our first fire in the living room knowing we're all safe and good to go!
