In addition to the temperature extremes on opposite sides of the exchanger, the furnace cycles (turns on and off) throughout the day, and the exchanger heats and cools with each cycle. As part of servicing, we'll check your heat exchanger for cracks, holes, or other damage that could be hazardous-ensuring your safety.
Your furnace is also likely to be the appliance that consumes the most energy in your home. Improvements in recent years have reduced operating costs through more efficient motors and more effectively extracting heat from fuel. So if you're looking to cut your energy bills-or just to cut your carbon footprint-the appliance that will provide the biggest impact is probably your furnace.
Deposits forming inside aging tanks contribute to reduced heating effectiveness, meaning the appliance efficiency is down and the time to reheat water ("recovery time") is up. Your appliance may just need servicing, it may be reaching the end of its life, or it may be undersized for your capacity. Integrated with your existing furnace, a central air system uses the existing ductwork to cool your whole house. Compared to operating several window units, a central air system is more efficient and has lower operating costs. Existing R-22 systems will not need to be replaced immediately, but the discontinuation of R-22 altogether in 2020 means it eventually will need to be.
