Indigo-Hammond & Playle Architects
We've been innovators in passive buildings since the 1970s. We wrote the first local energy saving-building code, which evolved into California's Title-24 building code. Our headquarters in Davis, CA is the first ZNE office building in northern California. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, better ventilation makes for healthy occupants by reducing indoor concentration of viruses and other airborne contaminants.

Many real estate developers believe that good indoor air quality will become an important selling-point for homes and offices in coming decades. At Indigo, we design buildings that improve indoor air quality through natural ventilation. Studies show that CO2 buildup makes us feel drowsy and unproductive, while fresh air helps us feel alert and alive.

Since the global pandemic, we also know that fresh air can save lives by reducing the risk of airborne disease transmission. Straw has been used as a building material for over 400 years. The building technique was further developed during the mid-19th century in the great plains region where timber was scarce and straw, an agricultural waste product, was found to be an inexpensive and extraordinarily insulative material.

We've been innovators in passive buildings for 50 years. With his design lab Living Systems, Indigo Principal Jon Hammond developed passive building solutions and wrote the first local energy-saving building code in the 1970s, which evolved into today's Title-24 California building code.
Human beings are part of nature. Our bodies are attuned to see best in natural light, remain alert breathing fresh air, and feel better when we have access to outdoor space. At Indigo we create climate-adapted buildings by working with sunlight and fresh air, abundant free resources that help us feel good, stay healthy, and remain productive.
Our changing climate makes it necessary to learn to live with fire and rethink how we build in the growing number of fire-prone areas throughout the western US. Luckily, we can design our built environment to be more resilient to fire and other disasters.
Indigo designs places for people. We meet our clients' needs, employing our experience to shape places that positively reflect them - places that are efficient, durable and replenishing. We serve all of California including Sacramento, the Bay Area, the Central Valley and Western Region of the United States.
Our workflow is streamlined and efficient. With a staff of ten, we know that every project benefits from the experience of our principles as well as the enthusiasm and new ideas of our team. As LEED-accredited and Zero-Net Energy (ZNE) architects, we stay true to three decades of ecological commitment, showing that green architecture can be implemented in a practical and cost-effective manner.
