Our team is anchored by Colgate Searle, Jr., educator, practitioner, designer, mentor. He has worked for more than 40 years in the landscape architecture profession. He is a Fellow in the American Society of Landscape Architects and a Professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).
His partner in work and life Cecelia Searle was the driving force behind Searle and Searle for many years until her untimely death in 2012. In 2015 the firm became Searle Design Group. Colgate is a Registered Landscape Architect in the state of Rhode Island, and Principal in the firm. Each project gets his personalized attention.
His work and research focuses on the complex topic of environmental stewardship. Colgate holds an undergraduate degree from RISD and a Master's degree in Landscape Architecture from Harvard University. He has lectured and been guest critic at Cornell, Harvard, Roger Williams University, Asian Institute of Technology in Thailand, the University of Maracaibo, Venezuela, and Tsinghua University in Beijing, China.

SDG's Master Plan for Wheeler Farm was designed to bring site ecology into the school's curriculum while maximizing the usability of athletic fields. Analysis of the farm's existing conditions made apparent the great educational value of the site for teaching ecology, geology, and surface water systems.
We were contacted by the PTA to solve the problem of sand blowing onto the elementary school playground and injuring students, as well as damaging equipment and plantings. We proposed a three-tiered approach of contacting the owner of the adjacent land to ask that they do some repair and modification on the downhill side of the dune.
The Botanical Center at Roger Williams Park offers visitors a unique educational experience among a large, diverse collection of plants. SDG conceptualized a Master Plan for the Center which created a unified vision for the overall site. Over the course of several phases, SDG designed new lighting, paving, and custom benches and oversaw the construction of the Winter Garden, the Summer Perennial Garden, and the Parallel Worlds Entrance Terrace.
For over 20 years, SDG has been a steward for one of the nation's first garden-cemeteries: Swan Point Cemetery. Established in 1846 and covering 200 acres, Swan Point is the largest green space in Providence, RI. Faced with the challenge of implementing a much-needed expansion while maintaining its historic elegance, Swan Point brought SDG on board to facilitate the seamless evolution of this important landscape.
