The tools and supplies needed to do to a complete installation, including; applying end cap, applying end splash, cutting sink hole, assembling miter, scribing and securing countertop to cabinets are listed below. Other common items may be needed. See individual headings that describe in detail the steps to do a professional looking countertop installation.
Properly installed new cabinets should be ready for countertop installation, without any additional steps. Older cabinets that have had the countertops removed may need additional preparation. With the countertops off the cabinets, now is a good time to check the condition of the cabinets. The cabinets must be secure to the wall and level, both front to back and level the length of the cabinets.
If the countertops fit well and no adjustments are needed proceed as follows; Using a good quality steel tape measure, make sure the tip is 90° to the blade (not bent). Take measurements along the wall of all the existing countertops. Measure existing island countertop length from end to end of island.
Cutting the sink cutout in a countertop is a straightforward procedure, but it must be done accurately. Tools needed are; jig saw, jig saw blade, power drill, drill bit (Fig. 1), tape measure, saw horses, straight edge and pencil or marking pen. Locate center of sink on cabinets. Take accurate measurement and write measurement down on paper for reference.
