Joe is a fourth generation builder and his experience and skills are indispensable, but the other qualities everyone appreciates about Joe are his enthusiasm, helpfulness, work ethic (except Joe doesn't consider it work), and his above and beyond attitude and love of his work. Each new design and project thrills Joe to practice learning and growing and improving.
If you are located in the San Diego area, you get to enjoy the benefits of having Joe Wood, the innovative thinker behind these awe inspiring designs, personally involved in the full scope of beautifying your property with wood structures. That can involve building with one of our existing designs or custom creating a design to perfectly accentuate your home and surroundings (or even a bit of both).
These qualities about Joe extend over to people outside of our San Diego service area who purchase plans and kits to build one of these designs or have one built. Joe goes out of his way to offer assistance, answer questions, and assure your success with having a WoodsShop design beautify your property.

Every project we build is unique, whether it's created from one of our existing designs or custom designed for your property, each structure is a work of art. Joe Wood combines his perpetual skill advancement, innovation, and love of his craft to make every project better than the previous one. Below you will see a good variety of past projects and the attention to detail we have become known for.
All of our PLANS come with an accurate Materials List, and some also come with Full Sized Template files for the more difficult and critical parts. We email you the files for each Plan page which you can print out at home, and any Full Sized Templates (if needed) can be taken to a printer and printed on 1' wide paper.
Japanese style design, more than any other, must be simple, balanced, have harmony, and be done with great skill and care using natural materials. I, Joe, do appreciate Japanese style more than any other, especially the Sukiya or Teahouse style. Many of our projects, plans, and kits are in Japanese style design but we do employ some traditional American joinery and western style building techniques.

Hi, I purchase one of Joe’s designs, a large 30’x40’ azumaya , back in 2012. I retired in 2016 and started working on my martial arts dojo full of fears and hope. I called joe and he was there all the time, with support, praise and helpful critique. I am very close to install the roof and I am very grateful for having found Joe and his elegant, simple and solid design. Mine’s is not a Sam’s club pergola but a building with a purpose. If you are still pondering, make the decision, you won’t be disappointed. Much success

Joe is without a doubt, one of the most interesting people to be actively pursuing trades-work. I worked for Joe from 2003- 2009, and I have to leave a comment here after the profound effect he had on my life. I had plenty of carpentry experience by way of rough framing when I started, but I was blown away at the creativity and passion he put into each and every project. At that time, most of the contractors I had worked for, were very specific about the amount of time that needed to be allocated to each project. Joe was complete opposite.

I saw Joe Wood’s website when I was looking for a patio cover. Since I am a sculpture myself, I was very impressed with his designs. I liked his aesthetic, especially the oriental quality. I asked him if he would make me a patio cover for a new deck that had recently been built. He came up with a beautiful idea to cover part of the deck with grey stained cedar that reflected the color of the deck and siding. He suggested that instead of using wood slats on top of the cedar structure, that the covering would be made of 3/4“ bamboo. I really liked that idea. It turned out

Joe first constructed a Japanese styled gate for my garden in 2006. His craftsmanship and the materials that he used were of superior quality. Joe crafted the gate from old growth cedar, and he brilliantly designed the gate's roof to conceal an unsightly hot water pipe, which ran from a detached garage to my house. Joe's gate, also, replaced a chain link fence transforming an eye sore into a stunningly beautiful focal point.
I've since moved into townhouse with a small front yard, which needed updating. Missing the aesthetic of my former residence, I contacted Modern Zen Garden and they installed

What an amazing experience. From start to finish Joe guided us thru our dream project of a Tori gate for our evolving Japanese garden. Offered many great ideas and worked with us to get just what we wanted. His craftsmanship is second to none. The quality of his woodworking is superb. This is a man who LOVES what he does and it shows. Plus he made delivery and installation a breeze. Great directions, step by step. Left nothing to the imagination. Made me feel like I actually could do it!! And I did. Couldn't be happier. Highly recommend.

Our landscape designer hired Joe to design and build a pergola and four gates for us as part of a complete overhaul of our front and backyard. His work stands out as one of the best and most distinctive features of our remodel. While the front gate and pergola are the showpieces, Joe took the two gates for our dog run and the gate for our garbage area just as seriously so that they are as beautiful as the others. Joe was particularly considerate in how much thought he gave to the design of the dog run gates to make them as secure as possible without sacrificing aesthetics. Everyone from friends

Joe Wood is a craftsman. He really enjoys making beautiful objects out of wood. His designs involve intricate patterns and exotic woods and are all beautiful. I am a woodworker and can say from experience that Joe knows what he is doing!
As a business man, Joe excels. He listens and then executes. He stays on the job until finished, too.
I recommend Joe Wood for your simple or exotic project.

While searching the internet for Japanese tea house plans to complete my Japanese influenced garden and koi pond, I was captivated by Joe Wood’s Japanese Azumaya designs. Purchasing the 10’ by 12’ plans for a curved roof Azumaya, I was amazed at the abundance of detail provided, but soon realized the limitations of my equipment would not allow the precise milling needed to produce the curved rafters with consistent accuracy. As a compromise, I purchased and milled the large posts and beams, and contracted with Joe to have the roof members professionally milled. The price was very reasonable

Copied below is an email that I sent to Joe Wood in 2005 after he built our beautiful deck, shade structure and spa surround. With top notch craftsmanship and materials, everything has been very low maintenance and has aged beautifully. In 2007, it was even published in Garden, Deck & Landscape Magazine!
