Services
Founded in 1869, AIA Philadelphia is among the oldest and most distinguished of AIA Chapters, with a long history of service to members and the public. AIA Philadelphia organizes architects in the region for the purpose of advancing their influence in shaping the built environment, and their ability to effectively practice architecture in an ever-changing society and competitive marketplace.
AIA Philadelphia pays tribute to more than 300 years of distinguished architectural history in our city. An expansive outdoor museum, the city's architecture represents some of the finest examples of nearly every period and style in America. The following are a few highlights in the rich history of our city and Chapter.
AIA Philadelphia boasts nearly 1,000 architects and related professionals as members, and is one of the most active AIA Chapters in the nation. The Chapter founded two organizations to serve the public: the Community Design Collaborative and Charter High School for Architecture + Design. In 2008 the Center for Architecture was established for the charitable and educational work of AIA Philadelphia.
William Penn and his surveyor Thomas Holme were visionary city planners. Although it took several decades for the city to grow into their plan, we have them to thank for our downtown streets laid out in a grid system with strategically located public squares. The early settlers along the Delaware River promptly ignored Penn's 1682 plan for a "greene Country Towne" full of large lots for gentleman's estates.
