Michael Connell Architect designs with long-term sustainability in mind, understanding that as households grow, a flexible design continues to accommodate ever-changing needs. We consider clients collaborators and strive for open, trusting relationships with them. We strive to respond creatively to existing conditions with a practical knowledge of construction.
Originally built as a summer cottage, this house was in need of a major overhaul. At the ground floor, the house was shored up and the hillside excavated to provide additional space. A trellis was added at the front to define the entry. A third story was added for a master bedroom suite with a roof deck, taking advantage of the views.
Indoors or out, on weekdays or weekends, a relaxing retreat can restore calm and order to your busy, chaotic life. We design relaxing weekend retreats, like these houses in Petaluma (lower left & upper right), the Sierras (lower right) and Sonoma County (upper left), or the renovation of this spacious attic retreat in Noe Valley (upper middle).
Gathering places are about breaking down walls, both physically and socially. Our renovations expand space and bring in inviting light, and our new homes focus on both indoor and outdoor gathering places. Whether for a lavish dinner party, an intimate gathering, or a weekend BBQ, we create spaces to bring people together.
Kitchens are the hub of the home. It is important that they both function well and look great, for everyday use as well as for social gatherings. Your perfect kitchen should be a reflection of how you use the space: How many cooks? How often do you entertain? Our kitchen designs respond to the style and personality of our clients.

I have worked with Mike on multiple residential projects in San Francisco and Napa. They include different styles of architecture; a Spanish home, Edwardian flats, Victorian flats and a condo. Mike creates a few proposals and is very willing to modify the plans to accommodate and satisfy his client. The outcome is using space and light in a very useful and creative manner. Mike listened carefully to my needs which where reflected in his plans. He stays on top of the permit process and the construction site. Mike is a delight to work with and has great talent. Every renovation has been inspiring
