TDA designs buildings, gardens, and courtyards that become settings for lives well-lived and-often-productive work. TDA is known for its early courtyard live-work communities, whose common spaces facilitate community in ways that were nothing less than a revolutionary rediscovery. Since the firm's founding in 1985, Landscape and site design have been an integral component of all TDA projects.
Tom advanced the Live/Work space development concept in Oakland to a new level. He will do the same type of creative, well designed work for any commercial project whether it's ground up construction, rehab or tenant improvements. Working with Tom is always a sheer delight. A just and well-functioning society provides housing choices for people at all income levels to live in safe, diverse, walkable neighborhoods within a ten-minute walk of a commercial center serving local needs and served by good public transit. Living in proximity to transit or one's place of work can make owning an automobile not necessary, resulting in a "Land Use Housing Subsidy" of roughly $750 per month.
This type of space is what most people imagine when they picture a typical "artist's loft." A live/with unit is typically a single space, including a kitchen located below a mezzanine/sleeping space, which looks out over a large contiguous working space. This arrangement offers the greatest flexibility and the fewest interior partitions, allowing the user to adapt it to many different configurations.
A neighborhood in which many of the people who live there also work within five minutes of where they live, and can meet most of their daily needs within a ten-minute walk of home, workplace, or live-work unit. Synonyms: Complete Neighborhood, Lifelong Neighborhood, Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NORC-because when you get old and lose your driver's license, you can walk everywhere).
